1. Cookies & Tea

Your weekly (hot) comfort is back this semester! Join us tomorrow, January 19th and every Tuesday from 11:30 - 12:30 for cookies and tea in the MUGS Lounge!

2. Field Notes Submissions

Field Notes 2015-2016 is now open for submissions! There are no official guidelines – all submissions of any length will be reviewed! Preferred topics of papers pertain to areas of critical geography such as feminist geography, subaltern geography, colonial geographies, and queer geographies. Nevertheless, feel free to submit papers on environment, health, GIS, urban, and human geography!

3. The GEOSPIEL

MUGS and GGS would like to invite all geographers and associated wannabes to join us at this year's GEOSPIEL. You won't want to skip out, it's gonna rock!

What on earth is a GEOSPIEL?
It's curling.

When is GEOSPIEL occurring?
Saturday, February 13th, 2016, from 1-6 pm.

Where will GEOSPIEL happen?
Baie d'Urfe Curling Club, accessible (contentious) via transit on the 211 Bus from Lionel Groulx

What do I have to lug there?
Everything – rocks, brooms, sliders – are provided. Wear warm, layered clothing so you can cool off when the brushing gets really intense. Also, it is imperative that you bring (not wear) clean grippy running shoes.

Can I pay in "gratitude and hugs?"
No you cheapskate! The afternoon costs $10 for ice and food. Also bring a few bucks if you want to reminisce over the hilarious times you just had over a post-ice drink.
(yes I know curling doesn't happen on skates but it's ice-related ok).

How can I get in on this sweeping success?
To sign up, email the lovely Robyn and get her your $10 by January 29th, 2016.

4. ESRI Scholarship

What is the shortest path to some financial assistance for your research and a sick rep? ESRI Canada is offering a GIS Scholarship to undergraduate students. The winner is awarded $2000, a permanent ArcGIS license and several ESRI book materials. To apply for the award, you must submit the following by February 16th, 2016:
  •  Resume. Include all course work and research conducted using ESRI technology.
  • Academic Transcript with a minimum 3.3 CGPA.
  • A one-page proposal of how you will use ArcGIS for your research. Projects that have clear objectives and could be finished by May 15th, 2016 will be favoured. Once finished, you must submit a report poster to ESRI Canada.
  • A letter of support from a faculty advisor willing to supervise your project.
To submit the application, send the above information as a single PDF – titled lastname_esriaward – to Pablo Arroyo with the subject "ESRI Award." The advisor can send their recommendation directly to Pablo. For questions, see the award website or email Pablo.

5. CCARG Summer Internships

The Climate Change Adaptation Research Group (@ccadapt) of McGill is offering paid summer internships. Internships are available in the following areas:
  • Evaluating current policies and programs in northern Canada (or Uganda or Peru) from the perspective of reducing vulnerability to the health effects of climate change
  • Examining how health adaptation is being addressed in global climate policy
  • Examining specific UN-funded adaptation projects
  • Tracking adaptation in the private sector
  • Conducting content analysis of the presentation of indigenous issues in the media
  • Examining adaptation projects that target Indigenous communities.

What a smorgasbord of opportunities! Two interns will join the cutting-edge team from mid-April until the end of August and be compensated $6,000. Successful candidates will be highly motivated, have strong writing skills, have proven academic excellence, and be dedicated to furthering understanding of the human dimensions of climate change. Interns will be expected to complete a publishable quality report on their project.

To apply, please send Michelle Maillet: your CV, a copy of your transcripts, and a cover letter outlining which of the internship topics appeals to you and why you are qualified to address it – ASAP.

10. Cool Thing of the Week

In honour of Alan Rickman, our favourite quasi-villain, but also in the eternal pursuit of all things geography, I perused the virtual fandom world of Harry Potter and found this image: Rowling's own mental map of the Hogwarts grounds, no doubt to get it right time and time again in creating the world of witchcraft and wizardry. She gave this map to the films' production designer so he too wouldn't screw it up.

If you're into this, or if you're someone who read The Lord of the Rings with your pinkie forever holding open the page with the map of Middle Earth, check out this tumblr account – F***yeahfictionalmaps

That's all, folks.

As a reminder, if you want to get anything on this supercalifragilistic listserv, email us and we'll put in a word!
